Construction in the Caribbean

We asked Project Manager Sam to report back on his experiences so far

Q. What projects are you currently involved with?

A. Building a multi-storey car park and retail project in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, West Indies

Q. Why did you decide to work overseas?

A. Mostly for a better salary and a lifetime experience.

Q. Is the experience living up to your expectations?

A. Yes, I previously worked in PNG for three and a half years and had a fair idea about what to expect.

Q. What were the biggest differences in the local construction industry?

A. Working with a different culture with regard to the client, their project manager, consultants and subcontractors

Q. What are you learning from the experience?

A. Different construction techniques and working with numerous nationalities always makes things interesting.

Q. What do you miss most about home?

A. Surfing! The surf isn't as good in Trinidad as it is in Sydney.

Q. Is there anything you would do differently next time?

A. Not really, I did some thorough research before making the decision to move to Trinidad.

Q. What have been the most memorable experiences outside of work?

A. Travelling. Over the past twelve months I have visited Costa Rica, Mexico, New York and I'm about to spend two weeks in Europe for my holiday.

Q. Would you recommend an overseas assignment to colleagues in construction?

A. Definitely, and I have done.
